PPE: Hard hats
Hard hats are the most widely used piece of PPE, but they’re frequently misused or abused. They should be carefully inspected before use and replaced when defective.
The two main components, the shell and suspension, should be inspected before the hat is worn. Check the shell for cracks, nicks, dents, gouges and any damage caused by impact or rough treatment. The suspension should be inspected for cracks or tears, frayed or cut straps and other signs of wear. All keys should fit securely into the key slots that are engaged in the hat’s shell.
Users should never alter or modify the shell or suspension, because it can reduce the amount of protection provided. Workers should never drills holes in their hat for ventilation purposes and they should never wear anything between the suspension and the shell. Hard hats shouldn’t be kept in the rear of a vehicle because they deteriorate from exposure to ultraviolet light.
Hard hats can last up to five years if they’re cared for properly, but they should be replaced sooner if they’ve been struck by a forceable blow or impact accident.
