Online safety training for Gen Y

As a new generation of under 30 workers – Gen Y, moves into the workplace, safety managers will be challenged to provide the safety training they need in a timely manner.

Since they use computers and the Internet to do just about everything, technology-based training will be ideal. Internet-based training has been popular for years, but not every company is using it. However, they should consider it to train Gen Y employees, because it is the platform they are most familiar with.

Here are some issues to consider before purchasing an Internet training system:

* Assess your organization’s readiness: make sure you are prepared and your employees have Internet access at work or at home.
* Choose the right partner or vendor. Select one that not only produces quality content, but supports your pre- and post-implementation efforts. Choose an e-learning vendor that has experience, customers who will provide references, consistently top notch content, the ability to customize off-the-shelf content and a results-oriented approach to training.
* Engage a cross section of management to ensure corporate buy-in.
* Pilot the program in an area of the company you believe has the greatest chance for success. Then build upon the success.

Gen Y employees want to get on board and up to speed very fast. Online training programs are available 24/7, so employees can get started right away.
