Safety awareness in post-Katrina Rebuilding efforts

The American Society of Safety Engineers urges thousands of workers involved in post-Katrina rebuilding efforts to be aware of key safety standards, according to Occupational Health & Safety magazine.

Companies, employees and contractors can use the American National Standards Institute construction and demolition safety standards in enhancing on-the-job safety at areas under construction in the Gulf Coast, including:

* Proper selection and use of PPE – from eye wear to respirators
* Disaster site defensive driving – drive at safe speeds based on road conditions
* Health and hygiene – drink potable water, avoid overexposure to sunlight
* First aid care – every worksite should have trained certified individuals
* Solid hazardous waste removal – evaluate waste disposal issues prior to cleanup
* Electrical hazards – avoid contact with power lines
* Chain saw safety -- avoid power lines when cutting tree branches
* Hearing protection – wear appropriate protection in noisy work environments
* Fire protection – test fire, smoke alarms and fire fighting equipment like sprinklers
* Air quality assessment – test for chemical/toxic agents and other contaminants
* Emergency planning – ensure clear path for emergency evacuation

These safety tips cover demolition, excavation, fall protection, scaffolding, masonry, sanitation and more.
