New EPA requirements for lead-based paint
The EPA proposed new requirements for contractors and construction workers working in homes that contain lead-based paint. To minimize lead hazards from the disturbance of lead-based paint during renovation of houses built before 1978 (when lead-based paint was banned), the EPA proposes that contractors be trained in lead-safe work practices, that renovators be certified and that they follow protective work practice standards.
The proposal promotes an EPA training curriculum that includes two courses that instruct workers how to work safely in homes with lead-based paint and how to contain and minimize lead dust to protect occupants from exposure to lead.
The rules would apply to all persons who do renovation for construction, including contractors, maintenance workers, painters and other specialty trades. The new requirements would apply to most renovation, repair or painting activities where more than two square feet of lead-based paint is disturbed.
